Funny, I've grown up saying 'cak' too, and I've never been anywhere near South Africa. Am thinking it might be an East Anglian thing - Dutch influence, perhaps?
I'm an American, and was an expat from 2002 to 2009. I've lived in the UK, South Africa, Poland, and all over the USA.
A few years ago, I uploaded all of my letters from South Africa, turning them into this blog. Originally these essays were sent to a large, international group of friends. If you want to read my story from the beginning, go to the September 2005 archives (Welcome to Jo'burg) and read forward from there. There's crime, terror, violence, sex, and a little bit of love too -- all the elements necessary for a great saga.
Recently we've moved back to Chicago. When I'm not packing or unpacking, I'm trying to adjust to wherever my new "home" is. Sense of humour? Required!
